This is the house of the man Brown University was named after. . . The John Brown House.
Stephen Hopkins 1707-1785 Merchant and ship builder, ten time Governor of Rhode Island, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Chancellor of Brown University, Member of the Colonial Congress, and Signer of the Declaration of Independence lived in the house 1743-1785. George Washington was once a guest here on April 6th 1776.
